Over crowding, temperature, moisture and Ph of the substrate can all be issues. An excess of moisture will effect the temperature and the oxygen level of the substrate and that makes the worms run! A simple way to check moisture is to to make a little ball of substrate in your hand and squeeze it, open the palm of your hand and if 70 to 80% of the palm of your hand is stained or moist then your within the realm of moisture recommended for the worms.
